We've asked our trading partner Michael Seery to give our readers a weekly recap of the futures market. He has been a senior analyst for close to 15 years and has extensive knowledge of all of the commodity and option markets.
Here's Mikes call on gold and silver. Read more of his calls for this week by visiting here.
Gold futures in the April contract are trading far below their 20 and 100 day moving average telling you that the trend is to the downside after settling last Friday at 1,213 while trading at 1,172 down $22 this Friday afternoon as the monthly unemployment report was construed as bullish sending gold to a 9 week low.
The U.S dollar is hitting another contract high up 110 points putting pressure on the precious metals as I'm currently recommending a short position in the mini contract which is $33 for every dollar move while placing your stop above the 10 day high which currently stands 1,223 risking around 50 points or $1800 per contract plus slippage and commission.
In my opinion I believe the U.S dollar will continue its bullish trend and therefore should continue putting bearish pressure on gold and silver prices here in the short term as the next level of support is at 1,165 and if that is breached I think that we test the contract low around 1,130 so continue to play this to the downside as the chart structure will start to improve later next week tightening the stop and reducing monetary risk.
Many of the commodity and stock markets were lower today due to the fact that United States treasury bonds plummeted this afternoon sending yields higher as now the speculation is that the Federal Reserve will start to raise rates in June which is another pessimistic fundamental indicator towards gold prices.

Silver futures in the May contract are trading below their 20 & 100 day moving average down about $.30 this Friday afternoon trading at 15.85 an ounce settling last Friday at 16.56 down around 70 cents for the trading week hitting a 9 week low as the U.S dollar is sharply higher once again. I am currently recommending a short position in silver in the mini contract which is $10 for every cent while placing your stop loss above the 10 day high around 16.90 risking around a $1.00 or $1,000 per contract plus slippage and commission.
The U.S dollar is the reason to blame for silvers weakness in today’s trade as I do believe commodity prices as a whole continue to move lower in the short time as the dollar looks to possibly hit 100 so continue to play this to the downside as the next major level of support is 15.50 which was hit on many different occasions only to rally every single time, however if that’s broken you would have to think that the bear market would resume.
The trend is your friend in the commodity markets and the trend is to downside at the current time however if you disagree with my opinion and you think prices are going higher my recommendation would be to buy at today’s price while placing the stop loss below 15.50 risking $.35 or $350 per mini contract plus slippage and commission, however I am currently recommending a short position in silver as prices look to retest contract lows in my opinion.
Trend: Lower
Chart Structure: Solid

Could Crude Oil Prices Intensify a Pending SP 500 Sell Off?
Last week we received reports that the unemployment rate in the United States was improving markedly. In addition, sentiment numbers were released that confirmed my previous speculation that market participants were becoming more and more bullish as prices in the S&P 500 edged higher. The exact numbers that came in demonstrated that bullish sentiment had not reached current lofty levels since February 11, 2011. The table below illustrates the most recent sentiment survey:
Chart Courtesy of the American Association of Individual Investors
Clearly investors are growing considerably more bullish at the present time. The bullishness being exhibited by market participants is rather interesting considering the notable headwinds that exist in the European sovereign debt markets, the geopolitical risk seen in light sweet crude oil futures, and the potential for a recession to play out in Europe.
To further illustrate the complacency in the S&P 500, the daily chart of the Volatility Index is shown below:
The VIX has been falling for several weeks and is on the verge of making new lows this week. If prices work down into the 16 – 18 price range a low risk entry to get long volatility may present itself. For option traders, when the VIX is at present levels or lower there are potentially significant risks associated with increases in volatility.
My expectations have not changed considerably since my article was posted last week. However, I continue to believe that the bulls will push prices higher yet in what I believe could be the mother of all bull traps. Let me explain. As shown above, we have strong bullish sentiment among market participants paired with general complacency regarding risk assets.
As I pointed out last week, my expectation if for the S&P 500 to top somewhere between 1,292 and 1,325. A lot of capital is sitting on the sidelines presently and if prices continue to work higher I suspect that a move above the 1,292 price level will trigger a lot of long entries back into stocks or other risk assets.
We could see prices extend higher while the “smart” money sells into the rally. Retail investors and traders will point to the inverse head and shoulders pattern on the daily chart of the S&P 500 and the breakout above the key 1,292 price level. The pervasive fear of missing a strong move higher will help fuel long entries from retail investors.
At the same time retail investors begin buying, a lot of committed shorts will be stopped out if prices push significantly above the 1,292 area or higher toward the more the obvious 1,300 price level. Thus, there will be few shorts to help support prices should a failed breakout transpire. A perfect storm could essentially be born from the lack of shorts to hold prices higher paired with the trapping of late coming bulls.
The daily chart of the S&P 500 Index below illustrates what I expect to take place in the next few weeks:
I want to reiterate to readers that it is not totally out of the question that the 1,292 price level could hold as resistance or that we could roll over early this coming week. Additionally a breakout over 1,330 will certainly lead to a test of the 2011 highs around the 1,370 area.
If the S&P 500 pushes above the 1,370 area we could witness a strong bull market play out. Ask yourself this question, what reasons could produce such a rally and what are the probabilities of that outcome transpiring in the next few weeks?
Obviously earnings season is going to be upon us shortly and if earnings come in below expectations a potential sell off could intensify. Furthermore, economic data in Europe continues to weaken and slower growth appears to be manifesting within the core Eurozone countries like Germany and France. If most of Europe plunges into a recession, deficits will widen beyond economic forecasts and the strain in the sovereign debt market of the Eurozone will increase dramatically.
One key element that many analysts are not even discussing is the potential for higher oil prices to present additional economic headwinds for developed western economies.
Clearly the situation in the Middle East is unstable, specifically what we are seeing taking place in the Strait of Hormuz involving Iran. If a “black swan” event occurs such as a military conflict between the United States and Iran or Israel and Iran the prices of oil will surge.
In a recent research piece put out by SocGen, nearly every scenario that is referenced involves significantly higher oil prices. According to the report, the Eurozone is considering the banning of imported Iranian oil which could cause Brent crude oil prices to surge to a range of $120 – $150 / barrel according to SocGen.
The other scenario involves the complete shut down of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran. If this shutdown were to persist for several days the expectation at SocGen for Brent crude oil prices is in the $150 – $200 / barrel price range.
Clearly if either of these two scenarios play out in real time, the impact that higher oil prices will have on European and U.S. economies could be catastrophic.
The daily chart of light sweet crude oil futures is shown below:
I want readers to note that I am not suggesting that oil prices are going to rise or fall, just outlining the report from SocGen about where they expect oil prices to go should either of the two scenarios presented above play out. If oil prices were to work to the $125 / barrel level and remain there for a period of time, I would anticipate a very sharp decline in the S&P 500.
Currently there are a lot of headwinds for bulls, some of which could persist for quite some time. I intend to remain objective and focus on collecting time premium as a primary profit engine for my Options Trading service.
Once I see a confirmed move in either direction I will get involved. For now, I intend to let others do the heavy lifting until a low risk, high probability trade setup presents itself. Risk is increasingly high.

How to Trade Oil ETFs When $100 Per Barrel is Reached
Crude oil was THE commodity to trade back in 2007-2008 when prices rocketed above $145 per barrel then dropped like a rock all the way back down to $35 per barrel leaving many investors and traders either greatly rewarded or dead broke.
Since then the focus of the world has moved to gold and silver as currencies spiral out of control with more and more reasons why individuals and entire countries should focus on owning physical metals rather than eroding currencies.
Just because a commodity is not under the direct spot light does not mean you can’t trade it or make money from it. With that said here is my analysis on how to trade oil if $100 per barrel is reached in the coming trading days.
Long Term Weekly Oil Futures Chart
Here you can see how oil is trading round the $100 level. When the price is trading below it then $100 will act as resistance and when oil is above then it becomes support.
Intermediate Term Daily Oil Trading Chart:
This is more of a close up look at oil and the $100 price point. Notice how oil has moved higher for an entire month without any real pullbacks and that it has a clean support trend line underneath. If oil sees some big sellers step in here at the $100 – $104 level then I expect the green support trend line to be broken. If that takes place oil could quickly and easily drop back down to the $90-$92 area.
How to Trade Oil Using an Oil ETF
This chart shows a long (bullish) oil ETF along with its price by volume levels. I like to review the price by volume analysis from time to time when nearing a major support or resistance level on a chart. For those who have difficulty finding support and resistance levels then this indicator/volume analysis tool will take most of your guess work out of the equation.
To make a long story short, the longer the volume bars on the left side of the chart are then the more people either bought or sold crude oil at that price. Keep in mind that it does not matter if they bought or sold here… the key to remember is that there are a lot of new positions here and that is where people exit their positions at breakeven because they held such a large draw down over the past few months and just want their money back.
Most traders and investors who trade off pure emotions (fear/greed) would have held a losing position through the August – October selloff and are now going to be more than happy to exit the trade at breakeven and move on to the next emotional roller coaster. It’s this type of trading which allows the non-emotional traders who thrive off of price action and mass psychology to catch price swings in the oil market.
The chart below clearly shows that oil is entering into resistance level and a pullback is becoming more likely each day. Those looking for an etf how to trade oil should look at buying SCO ETF. This oil ETF goes up in value when oil loses value.
How to Trade Oil and Oil ETFs Conclusion:
In short, oil is becoming overbought meaning it has moved up to far too fast and should have some profit taking shortly. The fact the oil is reaching a century number ($100) I feel there will be a couple days of selling starting soon. Traders looking to play this support trendline breakdown should look at trading SCO oil etf.

Dow, Gold & Crude Oil are Breaking Out or Bouncing
Over the years we have seen the stock market make some pretty exciting moves for share holders. This year alone there have been some interesting events unfold causing wild market swings which most of us did not think could happen. Things like countries going bankrupt and the May flash crash. Also the BP Oil well leak which looks as though its about to kill not only businesses around the world but a large population of animals and fish which our planet will never be able to get back… It’s been a crazy year!
It sure would be nice if the financial situations between all he countries could be resolved, and if we could have some proper regulations on banks and the financial system to minimize fraud and manipulation. From the looks of everything we have a few years still before things get sorted out, fixed and some what stabilized.
Below are some charts showing where the Dow, Gold and Oil are currently trading and my thoughts on them.
DIA – Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF – Daily Chart
The past 12 years we have seen the DJIA go through some large bull and bear markets providing those with trading experience to generate large profits in both the bull and bear markets.
Recently we have seen the DJIA pullback and test the key pivot point and has started to bounce. Although this price action is positive I have my doubts about another bull market rally because of how the chart looks. I focus most of my analysis on chart patterns, volume and market internals. These allow me to monitor the overall heath of the market on a daily, week and monthly basis. Using these techniques I am able to pull money from the market consistently.
This year we saw some extremely heavy selling in May which could have been strong enough to shift the trend from an up trend to a down trend. I call these large volume candles Get Ready Spikes. If they are green then we are looking for higher prices but when they are red it means distribution is starting and lower prices could start to form in the coming months.
The DIA chart below looks to be forming a very large head and shoulders pattern which is currently trading near the top of the right shoulder. This pattern is very bearish and points to much lower prices in the next couple years if the major support level (neckline) is broken.
GLD – Gold Exchange Traded Fund – Daily Chart
The chart of gold shows the same cup and handle pattern which I have been talking about for a while now. Last week the price of gold made a new high breaking out of this pattern. We could see the price of gold start to work its way up to the $1400-1500 level over the next 3-6 months which calculates to $140-150 on the GLD etf.
USO – Crude Oil Fund – Daily Chart
USO oil fund has been trend down for a couple months and recently put in a nice bounce from the May low. I feel as though oil is forming a bear flag and could head lower in the coming weeks. Until it breaks the key resistance level traders must be cautious if they have any long trades right now.
Weekend Dow, Gold and Oil Trading Conclusion:
In short, I’m bullish on stocks for the short term and think we could retest the April high in the next month or two. But after that the market could roll over and from there we could see much lower prices. Or we could see the indexes breakout and start another leg higher… During volatile times like we are in now… we must trade with caution until the overall health of the market clearly indicates the direction of stocks. Until then focusing on low risk setups and taking profits quickly is the safest trading strategy.
Gold looks to be setup for a strong move higher. I am hoping for another dip to shake out some investors before it continues its march upwards. Oil on the other hand is trading near a key resistance level. Only time will tell if it can break through and start a rally. If not then we will see the market struggle.

Precious Metals & Oil ETF Trend Trading
Last week was exciting with broad market and gold forming an intraday reversal pattern after a long overbought rally, then broke down though short term key support levels. While this move lower was tough on the pocket book for those who chased the market up the past few days and/or were not moving their protective stops up, this move is good for the health of the market.
This pullback is actually a good thing for us active traders who wait for low risk setups and don’t chase prices higher, but rather buy on the dips in a bull market when most of the risk has been flushed out already. Trading with low risk setups is not the most exciting type of trading because there are not a ton of setups but if one can be patient and wait for these plays it is a very profitable strategy in the long run.
Those traders who live and breathe the market focusing on trading intraday price action most likely made a small fortune last week with Fridays sell off in stocks and precious metals. You can see how some of us took advantage of this sharp pullback last week with my before and after videos.
Below are the charts showing what I am currently thinking is going to happen for gold, silver, gold stocks and oil. I will be tracking the market with intraday charts to help pin point a low risk entry point for a possible short or long position as the market unfolds this week.
GLD – Gold Trading ETF
The chart below is an updated chart which I have showed several times. It shows how gold corrected, bottomed and is now trending back up. This week I will be watched closely to be sure we take a position which has the highest probability of working in our favor if and when a low risk setup occurs.

SLV – Silver Trading ETF
Silver really took a hit on Friday. It is now trading near support but there is not much we can do until we see what happens on Monday. There could be a bounce or more down side, tough to call right now…. And it’s not something you want to be on the wrong side of.

Gold Stocks – Gold Stock Trading
Gold stocks did not drop as much as I thought they would which indicates the market is still very bullish on gold. There is still potential for more downside… so I am letting the market unfold before doing anything.

USO – Oil Trading Fund
You can see oil moved down sharply on Friday and is now testing both a price support level and trendline support. Although this looks like a perfect setup, the market is designed to shake people out of positions before continuing the move. So it is likely for oil to dip which would break both these support levels triggering stop orders. Then the price should drop to the key support level where support should be found for at least a bounce or a new bottom.

Precious Metal & Oil ETF Trading Conclusion:
In short, the market had a nice correction on Friday and the heavy selling volume indicates that we are getting close to a larger correction which should provide two swing trades, a shorting opportunity and a new buying opportunity in the coming days, weeks or months depending how long the market takes with this pullback/correction.

Technical Setups on Gold, Silver, Oil & Natural Gas ETF’s
This week has been playing out as expected with prices grinding their way higher and lots of sharp intraday sell offs and rallies which is indicative of a market getting toppy.
Seems like the masses feel as though they are getting left behind which is why we are starting to see the panic buying in the market (new money buying at these lofty overbought prices).
Each time there is a new intraday or daily high on the major indexes there is a renewed bullishness created as breakout traders and novice traders buy into the market hoping for the next surge in price. It is these volume surges of new money entering the market which the big guys (smart money) are selling into. You can see it clear as day light on the intraday charts as new money gets sucked into the market new high and then 2 minutes later larger waves of selling hit the bids. I did explain and show a chart of how this looks to members of the FuturesTradingSignals.com today.
We have some very exciting times ahead and it’s just a matter of letting the market unfold over time as we take advantage of these carefully measured low risk setups.
On to the charts....
GLD ETF Trading – Gold Exchange Trading Fund
You can see how this chart has evolved from pattern to pattern as it bottomed over time.
Today we had a breakout and I expect to see a pullback which is normal when prices gap up and breakout of a pattern. An entry point would be considered on a pullback if the proper criteria are met.

SLV ETF Trading – Exchange Traded Fund
Silver has always been much more volatile than gold which is why the pullback early this year was so strong and why the recent rally has also covered so much ground. As you can see silver has broke out above resistance but is now looking overbought. A pullback in precious metals is expected, or a pause at least.

USO Crude Oil Fund
Oil has made a nice move higher the past week but I feel it will pullback also in the coming days for a breather. There are a couple sizable gaps to fill all the way back down to $40.50.

UNG Natural Gas Fund
This natural gas chart looks very interesting. In the chart I am comparing the 2009 low to today’s price action.
From looking at the chart, natural gas is way oversold and in dire need of a relief rally. As you can see the sharp rallies which occurred just before both the 2009 and the current possible bottom look identical. This type of price action is very common to see.
Let me explain: When an investment is this over sold, meaning it has sold lower for weeks if not months, then there is a large growing number of traders looking to pick a bottom. Once these traders see prices start to move higher they all jump in thinking its “The Bottom”. Some times it is but more times than not it’s just a suckers rally.
General rule is, if everyone can see it, then its most likely not going to happen.. this is also part of the reason the major indexes keep going up. It looks like a great short and a tone of traders are in cash waiting to take advantage of the drop. But the market will keep pushing higher until fear its not going to pullback. That’s when the new money buys back in fueling the GRIND higher.
Anyways, so after all the bottom pickers jump on the train and there are not any more buyers and the price tends to drift lower scaring these traders back out of the position. Eventually a new low is made and everyone is shaken out of the investment. The crazy part is that just as they get out, the price usually turns around and does exactly what they new was going to happen –Go Up.
Most traders have the direction correct, it’s just their timing is off. My general rule is when I see something I wait another bar, sometimes I keep saying that to my self after each new bar until I am confident in the predicted move or price I can get into the position at.

Mid-Week Trading Conclusion:
In short, the bull market continues to grind its way higher. Unfortunately we cannot do much until there is some type of correction because buying way up here after a 2 month rally is outside of my comfort zone.
I foresee a 3-5% correction starting any day now so I am keeping my gunpowder dry.

Weekly Gold, Silver, Crude Oil & Natural Gas Analysis
From guest analyst Chris Vermeulen....
Last week was nothing special as stock market continued to drift higher on light volume and the Volatility Index (VIX) reaching a new multi year low. This mix of higher prices on light volume, multi year lows in the VIX and an overbought market paints a clear picture to a market technician – Be Ready for a Pullback!
Last Wednesday we posted Chris' report covering sector rotation comparing the price performance of these sectors from the January peak with last weeks price action. It was very interesting and it pointed to a sharp sell off Thursday or Friday.

GLD Gold ETF Daily & 60 Minute Chart
Last week gold gap higher then traded sideways for a few days. I will admit it was very tempting to buy into the move but I stuck with my trading strategy which is to not chase moves which gap in my direction.
Gaps are known to get filled about 70% of the time. What that means in this situation is that the price will most likely sell back down to fill that gap before trying to move higher.
All that said the problem I see now on the daily chart is the possibility of the mini Head & Shoulders pattern breaking down. If gold moves any lower then I would expect a sharp pullback. The measured move would equal a pullback to the $104 area on the GLD chart and the $1070 level for spot gold.

SLV Silver ETF Trading Chart
The silver chart looks much different than gold’s but in reality they are trading in a similar situation. If silver moves any lower then sellers will flood the market and take the price down to the next support level. But if we get a bounce then it should surge and rally almost a $1 per ounce from this point.
Only time will tell as we let this trade unfold with a stop at $16.52.

Natural Gas – Weekly Trading Chart
Natural gas has been selling down for almost 2 months. The chart is starting to show a possible buy point if all goes well in the next few weeks.
What I like about this chart is that we saw a break of a support level and heavy selling which tells me the general herd is getting shaken of their long positions. This extended sell off is now entering a support zone and could provide us with a low risk setup in the next 2-3 weeks.

Crude Oil – Weekly Trading Chart
Oil is trading similar to gold and silver. It is trading at a key pivot point and could go either way quickly. I will be keeping my eye on the daily and 60 minute charts for a possible low risk entry point.

Weekend Stock & Commodity Trading Conclusion:
In short, the overall market is trading at level were there is not much to we can do. Day traders are able to take advantage of this price action but not swing traders.
I feel the major indexes have another 1-2 down day left in them before a bounce, but it’s more difficult to gauge the momentum with a cool down period in the middle of it all (the weekend).
The market is on the edge of some exciting moves as I can feel something brewing. With any luck there could be some great opportunities in the coming days.
