Heisenberg's Next Big Short

The "Next Big Short" is a collection of looming market risks from The Heisenberg. This 37 page special report will show you the risks in the markets. How to explain The Heisenberg?

Essentially, it's a collective brain trust of skilled traders willing to discuss markets with the freedom of anonymity. You can enjoy Heisenberg's lively market commentary in the TheoDark Report section of their public blog.

For more backstory, here's Heisenberg in his own words: Heisenberg spent a long time in college. Probably too long. Be that as it may, the experience afforded him extensive cross disciplinary experience. From Aristotle to Kant to Wittgenstein, from Hobbes to Locke to Rousseau, from plain vanilla equities to FX to CDS, Heisenberg is right at home. With degrees in political science and business, as well as extensive post graduate work in political science and public administration, Heisenberg is uniquely positioned to analyze markets from a holistic perspective. He also has a sense of humor, which allows him to fully appreciate how entertaining it is to talk about himself in the third person.

Heisenberg has traded pretty much everything at one time or another and if he hasn’t traded it, he’s studied it enough to drive himself just as crazy as if he had. He doesn’t sleep much because the terminal doesn’t sleep and neither, generally speaking, do currency markets.

Heisenberg once took the law school admission test (LSAT) for fun with no intention of actually going to law school. He then took it again to try and beat his first score. He paid for the second test with profits he made from long calls on a Brazilian water utility ADR that he sold to close from the first iPhone (the 2.5G version that no one remembers) in the middle of a graduate political science class. His score on the verbal section of the graduate management admission test (GMAT) was near perfect. As was his score on the analytical writing portion. Don’t ask about the math section. He got bored after two hours and didn’t care about using the Pythagorean theorem to determine how long Timmy’s shadow was when he was standing next to a 90 degree flag pole.

Professionally, Heisenberg has worked in Manhattan and many other locales and has years of experience generating and monetizing financial web content. He’s continually amused at those who make it seem hard. You provide quality content for users on a consistent basis. Everything else falls into place. Build it, and they will come.

Weekly Gold and Silver Markets Recap with Mike Seery

The institutional traders are back from vacation and trading volume is picking up. So who better to have than our trading partner Mike Seery back to give our readers a recap of this weeks trading and help us put together a plan for the upcoming week.

Gold futures in the December contract settled last Friday in New York at 1,121 an ounce while currently trading at 1,106 down about $15 this week trading below its 20 and 100 day moving average near a 3 week low as I’m currently sitting on the sidelines as this market remains choppy with poor chart structure.

I still see no reason to own gold currently as the risk/reward is not your favor so look at other markets that are starting to trend such as the silver market which I am currently recommending a short position because the chart structure is outstanding. Gold prices had a significant rally in the month of August bottoming out around 1,080 then rallying to 1,170 which was impressive in my opinion due to short covering and a flight to quality as the stock market has experienced volatility in recent weeks sending money out of stocks and into gold as a safe haven but things have settled down putting short term pressure on gold.

As I’ve talked about in many previous blogs I am a trend follower and I do not like to trade choppy markets because they are extremely difficult in my opinion so avoid this market at the current time and focus on silver.
Trend: Lower
Chart Structure: Poor

Silver futures in the December contract are trading lower by about $.30 this Friday afternoon in New York currently trading at 14.33 an ounce as I’ve been recommending a short position from around 14.70 and if you took that trade place your stop loss above the 10 day high which currently stands at 14.95 as you’re going to have to be patient as that stop loss will not be lower for quite some time.

The next major level of support is at the contract low around the $14 mark and I do think that’s a possibility that could be retested in next week’s trade as the chart structure is still very solid at the current time. Silver prices settled last Friday at 14.55 while currently at 14.33 down over $.20 for the trading week as prices have been consolidating the recent downdraft in prices over the last three weeks, but the long term and short term trend still remain bearish in my opinion, so continue to play this to the downside while taking advantage of any price rally while maintaining the proper risk management strategy.

Silver futures are trading below their 20 and 100 day moving average closing at 3 week low in today’s trade as the commodity markets still looks bearish in my opinion.
Trend: Lower
Chart Structure: Solid

Weekly Gold Futures Summary with Mike Seery

Gold futures in the December contract settled last Friday in New York at 1,134 an ounce while currently trading at 1,122 down about $12 this week trading below its 20 and 100 day moving average near a 2 week low as I’m currently sitting on the sidelines as this market remains choppy with poor chart structure.

The monthly unemployment report number was released this morning in the United States adding 173,000 new jobs which was below consensus having very little impact on gold prices today as I still see no reason to own gold currently as the risk/reward is not your favor so look at other markets that are starting to trend.

As I’ve talked about in many previous blogs I am a trend follower and I do not like to trade choppy markets because they are extremely difficult in my opinion so avoid this market at the current time.

When Do You Add To Your Winning Trade?

This has always been a very interesting question because it can create a situation of going from rags to riches or from riches to rags in a very short amount of time. Many times I see traders abuse pyramiding or adding to positions with utter lack of any type of money management system in place and letting it ride which usually ends up in a complete wipeout of capital and sometimes even worse.

Commodity prices can move very quickly with large gains or loses like we experienced in the 2008 crash of stock and commodity prices, so you always have to use stops and not fall in love or marry a position. In my opinion the answer to this question is add only once to the trade if that position has made you at least 2%-3% of your account balance while still having stop losses on all positions that equal 2% loss at a maximum risk.

Remember your stop loses will be different on both positions because of the fact that you entered those trades at a different date and price.

Mike Seerys Weekly Gold and Silver Futures Recap

Our trading partner Michael Seery is back with his weekly recap of the Futures market. He has been a senior analyst for close to 15 years and has extensive knowledge of all of the commodity and option markets.

Gold futures in the June contract are closing down $18 this Friday afternoon to settle around 1,176 an ounce hitting a 5 week low as I’m now recommending a short position while placing your stop loss above the 10 day high which currently stands at 1,209 risking around $32 or $1,000 per mini contract plus slippage and commission as the chart structure is solid at the current time.

Gold futures finished down about $25 for the trading week as all the action is back into the S&P 500 which is hitting all time highs once again this Friday afternoon as money is coming out all precious metals and into the equity market and that trend is going to continue as I’m recommending a bullish position in the equities at the current time as well.

Gold futures are trading below their 20 and 100 day moving average telling you that the trend remains to the downside as the chart structure will not improve for another week or so but take advantage of any rallies as I think the risk/reward is your favor as the retest of 1,140 could be developing here in the next several weeks especially if the S&P 500 continues to move to the upside. The U.S dollar continues to consolidate its massive move to the upside and I think that will continue but I don’t see any reason to own gold at the current time.
Trend: Lower
Chart structure: Solid

Here's more calls from Mike on Oats. natural gas, coffee, corn, wheat, soybeans and more!

Silver futures in the July contract are down $.15 this Friday afternoon to close around 15.71 an ounce hitting a 5 week low as I have been recommending a short position when prices broke $16.00 and if you took that trade the chart structure has improved tremendously in the last several days so place your stop at 16.55 risking around $.80 or $800 per mini contract plus slippage and commission.

The next level of support in silver is 15.50 and if that’s broken in next week’s trade I would have to think that a longer term bear market would be in place so continue to play this to the downside as the risk/reward is in your favor in my opinion. Silver futures are trading below their 20 and 100 day moving average telling you that the trend is to the downside as it has the classic bear market trend grinding lower on a daily basis as I do think volatility will increase.

Volatility is still relatively low as silver and gold futures were down Friday afternoon also hitting a 5 month low as the precious metals remain weak as the U.S dollar is still hovering around an 11 year high as I think a secular bullish trend in the dollar will continue for quite some time so continue to play silver to the downside.

Silver futures on the daily chart may have created a longer term head and shoulders top but as a trader I want to focus on risk as the chart structure will not improve until later next week as I see no reason to own the precious metals as all the action is back into the stock market as prices are hitting all time highs again today.

Weekly Gold and Silver Market Recap with Mike Seery for Week Ending Friday February 27th

It's time for our trading partner Mike Seery to give us his weekly call on commodities [including where to place your stops] and especially coffee and sugar. Mike has been Senior Analyst for close to 15 years and has extensive knowledge of all of the commodity and option markets.

Gold futures in the April contract are currently trading at 1,212 up around $3 an ounce while settling last Friday at 1,205 finishing up $7 in a relatively quiet trading week. Gold futures are trading below their 20 and 100 day moving average as I’ve talked about in many previous blogs I do think gold is now being used as a currency due to the fact that the Euro currency and many foreign currencies are absolutely falling out of bed as interest rates in many countries have gone negative so who wants to place money into a bank and lose money as investors are looking at gold which has no dividend but still it’s better than a negative return.

Volatility in many of the commodity markets is very high at the current time especially the precious metals and I expect that to continue despite the fact that the U.S dollar hit an 11 year high continuing its secular bull market in my opinion as I do think 100 is on its way in the next several months as the United States economy is doing much better than any economy worldwide. Gold futures have rallied from a contract low of 1,130 all the way up to about 1,310 in the last several months as I’m sitting on the sidelines waiting for better chart structure to develop as money is moving back into the S&P 500 sending prices to all time highs as I don’t see any reason to own gold despite all of the worldwide problems.

Silver futures in the May contract are up $.5 this Friday afternoon in New York currently trading at 16.66 an ounce settling last Friday at 16.32 finishing up about 40 cents for the trading week with extreme volatility so make sure that you use the proper amount of contracts risking only 2% of your account balance as I like to trade the mini contract which is $10 a cent versus $50 a cent on the large contract as high volatility has also entered the S&P 500 and the currency markets in recent weeks.

As I talked about in previous blogs I believe silver is now being used as a currency due to the fact that interest rates around the world are so low that investors are looking at silver as a currency replacing traditional paper currencies as nobody wants to own anything in Europe. Many of the commodity markets continue to head lower however silver remains choppy at the current time as I am still recommending investors to sit on the sidelines and wait for a trend to develop.

Weekly Gold and Silver Futures Recap with Mike Seery

Our trading partner Mike Seery is out with his calls for this week and he includes some of reliable rules to protect our profits.

Gold futures in the February contract are slightly lower this Friday afternoon in New York after settling last Friday at 1,216 currently trading at 1,260 as I’m currently recommending a long futures position while placing your stop loss below the 10 day low which is around 1,209 risking around $50 or $1,650 on a mini contract plus slippage and commission. Gold futures are trading above their 20 and 100 day moving average hitting a 5 month high as the chart structure will also start to improve on a daily basis starting next week as the market has caught fire recently due to worldwide problems as money is pouring back into the precious metals and out of the S&P 500 in the beginning of 2015.

Yesterday the Swiss government announced they will let the Swiss Franc float rocketing that currency up while sending shock waves through the bond and currency markets and it certainly looks to me that problems are here to stay here for a while as Europe is a mess and this could push gold up to the next resistance level of 1,300 – 1,320 so take advantage of any price dip while maintaining the proper stop loss risking 2% of your account balance on any given trade as gold has finally turned into a short-term bull market once again.
Trend: Higher
Chart structure: Improving

Silver futures are trading above their 20 day but right at their 100 day moving average settling last Friday at 16.12 while currently trading at 17.05 an ounce as I’m recommending a bullish position in silver while placing your stop below the 10 day low which is at 16.11 risking around $.90 or $4,500 per contract plus slippage and commission as the chart structure will also improve on a daily basis starting next week. The next major level of resistance is between 17.35 – 17.50 and if that level is broken I would have to think that silver prices have a chance to reach $20 here in the short term as once again money is flowing into the precious metals and out of the stock market for the 1st time in several years as investors are thinking that silver may have been overdone to the downside.

Many of the commodity markets continue to head lower as there is weak demand throughout many sectors due to the fact that the U.S dollar is at a 9 year high while silver & gold prices have also been in bearish trends until recently, however with what’s going on in France and Isis running havoc throughout the Mideast people are finally looking at the precious metals as a safe haven once again so the rest of the commodity markets can go lower with gold and silver still moving higher but play by the rules as the chart structure meets criteria in my opinion.

Mike Seerys Weekly Gold Market Recap for Week Ending Friday December 19th

Gold futures in the February contract are trading below their 20 and 100 day moving average settling last Friday in New York at 1,222 currently trading at 1,196 continuing its long term bearish trend as I’m currently sitting on the sidelines in this market as volatility is too high and the price remains extremely choppy as we head into the new year.

Gold prices rallied as high as 1,240 last week before settling back despite the fact that the stock market had a wild ride but the interest still is in the S&P 500 which looks like it’s going to close right near another record high today. The problem with the gold market is the ETF market in gold might be sold come year end for tax purposes and when that happens the ETF than has to sell the futures contract so I still think lower prices are ahead but this market is difficult to trade at the current time so move on and find a market that is trending strong in one direction.

The U.S dollar hit another multiyear high which is generally pessimistic commodity prices and especially precious metals prices, however with turmoil in Russia gold prices have been extremely volatile with many $30/$40 price ranges on any given day so if you do trade this market make sure you place the proper amount contracts limiting risk to 2% of your account balance as I have to admit it’s fun to watch but I remain on the sidelines until a true breakout occurs.

Rumors of Russia having to sell some of their gold reserves sent gold prices down nearly down $30 in Wednesday’s trade however that rumor has not been verified at the current time but with the problems in Russia it would not surprise me about anything.

U.S. Dollar Continues to Pressure Gold, Here's this Weeks Trading Levels

Gold futures in the December contract rallied sharply this Friday afternoon closing up $27 an ounce to finish at $1,170 after falling over 100 dollars in the last 2 weeks as massive profit taking sent prices to the upside as prices are still trading below their 20 & 100 day moving average settling last week at 1,170 finishing basically unchanged which is amazing in my opinion as Fridays come back was remarkable rallying over $40 from session lows.

Gold prices are trading right near a 5 year low as major support is around 1,100 as the chart structure is awful at this time so I’m advising clients to stay away as the 10 day high is too far away with too much risk as the U.S dollar continues to move higher pressuring many commodities especially the precious metals but wait for the chart structure to improve reducing monetary risk.

Get our latest FREE eBook "Understanding Options"....Just Click Here!

I’m certainly not recommending any type of bullish position in gold as I believe the stock market will continue to grind higher for the rest of 2014 as money flows will continue to pour into equities and out of the precious metals so look for opportunities to sell while placing your stop above the 10 day high make sure that you only risk 2% of your account value on any given trade as volatility is extremely high as I think today’s action was just a kick back in price which was probably overdue.

If you really think about it what’s the reason to own gold at this time as equities continue to trade at all time highs while paying dividends in many sectors were as gold is used as an inflation hedge and at this point in time deflation is a problem not inflation so avoid this market to the upside and take advantage of any rally to get short.

How to Spot & Time Stock Market Tops

Since the middle of April everyone and including their grandmother seems to have been building a short position in the equities market and we know picking tops or bottoms fighting the major underlying trend is risky business but most individuals cannot resist.

The rush one gets trying to pick a major top or bottom is flat out exciting and that is what makes it so darn addicting and irresistible. If you have ever nailed a market top or bottom then you know just how much money can be made. That one big win naturally draws you back to keep doing it much like how a casino works. The chemicals released in the brain during these extremely exciting times are strong enough that even the most focused traders fall victim to breaking rules and trying these type of bets/trades.

So if are going to try to pick a top you better be sure the charts and odds are leaning in your favor as much as possible before starting to build a position.

Below are a few charts with my analysis and thoughts overlaid showing you some of the things I look at when thinking about a counter trend trade like picking a top within a bull market.

Utility Stocks vs SP500 Index Daily Performance Chart:

The SPY and XLU performance chart below clearly shows how the majority of traders move out of the slow moving defensive stocks (utilities – XLU) and starts to put their money into more risky stocks. This helps boost the broad market. I see the same thing in bonds and gold this month which is a sign that a market top is nearing.

That being said when a market tops it is generally a process which takes time. Most traders think tops area one day event but most of the times it takes weeks to unfold as the upward momentum slows and the big smart money players slowly hand off their long positions to the greedy emotion drove traders.

Look at the chart below and notice the first red box during September and October. As you can see it took nearly 6 weeks for that top to form before actually falling off. That same thing could easily happen again this time, though I do feel it will be more violent this time around.

SPYXLU

SPY ETF Trading Chart Shows Instability and Resistance:

Using simple trend line analysis we see the equities market is trading at resistance and sideways or lower prices are more likely in the next week or two.

SPYResistance

Stocks Trading Above 150 Day Moving Average Chart:

This chart because it’s based on a very long term moving average (150sma) is a slow mover and does not work well for timing traded. But with that said it does clearly warn you when stocks are getting a little overpriced and sellers could start at any time.

General rule is not to invest money on the long side when this chart is above the 75% level. Rather wait for a pullback below it.

BarC150

Stocks Trading Above 20 Day Moving Average Chart:

This chart is based on the 20 day moving average which moves quickly. Because it reacts quicker to recent price action it can be a great help in timing an entry point for a market top or bottom. It does not pin point the day/top it does give you a one or two week window of when price should start to correct.

BarC20

How to Spot and Time Stock Market Tops Conclusion:

As we all know or will soon find out, trading is one of the toughest businesses or and one of the most expensive hobbies that one will try to master. Hence the 95-99% failure rate of individuals who try to understand how the market functions, position management, how to control their own emotions and to create/follow a winning strategy.

With over 8000 public traded stocks, exchange traded funds, options, bonds, commodities, futures, forex, currencies etc… to pick from its easy to get overwhelmed and just start doing more or less random trades without a proven, documented rule based strategy. This type of trading results in frustration, loss of money and the eventual closure of a trading account. During this process most individuals will also lose friends, family and in many cased self-confidence.

So the next time you think about betting against the trend to pick a top or a bottom you better make darn sure you have waited well beyond the first day you feel like the market is topping out. Stocks trading over the 150 and 20 day moving averages should be in the upper reversal zones and money should be flowing out of bonds and other safe haven/defensive stocks to fuel the last rally/surge higher in the broad market.

Also I would like to note that I do follow the index futures and volume very closely on both the intraday and daily charts. This is where the big money does a lot of trading. Knowing when futures contracts are being sold or bought with heavy volume is very important data in helping time tops and bottoms more accurately. And the more experience you have in trading also plays a large part in your success in trading tops and bottoms.

Correction near but Bull Market has LONG waves to Go!

Are you using Elliot Wave theory in your trading? Today David Banister of Market Trend Forecast is laying out the Elliot formations in detail. Do yourself a favor and take a few minutes to make sure you are looking at this market through his eyes. Can any of us call the pull back exactly and reliably? No, of course not. But we should all be taking this into consideration.

The SP 500 has been on a tear as we all know especially since the SP 500 bottomed at 1343 several months ago. My work centers around forecasting using Elliott Wave Theory along with other technical indicators. This helps with projecting the short, intermediate, and longer term paths in the stock market and also precious metals. This larger picture Bull Cycle started in March of 2009 interestingly after an exact 61.8% Fibonacci retracement of the entire move from 1974 to 2000 lows to highs. At 666, we had completed a major cycle bottom with about 9 years of movement to retrace 26 years of overall bull cycle. That was a major set of 3 waves (Corrective patterns in Elliott Wave Theory) from the 2000 highs to 2002-3 lows, then 2007 highs to 2009 lows. Once that completed its work, we were free to have a huge new bull market cycle off extreme sentiment and generational lows.

It’s important to understand where we were at in March of 2009 just as much as it is today with the market at all time highs. Is this the time to bail out of stocks or do we have a lot more upside yet to go? Our short answer is there is quite a bit more upside left in the indexes, but there are multiple patterns that must take place along the way. We will try to lay those out for you here as best we can.

Elliott Wave theory in general calls for 5 full wave cycles in a Bull pattern, with 1, 3, and 5 bullish and 2 and 4 corrective. We are currently in what is often the most bullish of all the patterns, a 3rd of a 3rd of a 3rd. In English, we are in Primary wave 3 of this bull cycle which will be 5 total primary waves. We are in Major wave 3 of that Primary 3, and in the Intermediate wave 3 of Major wave 3. That is why the market continues its relentless climb. This primary wave 3 still has lots of work to do because Major wave 3 still has a 4th wave down and a 5th wave up to finish, then we need a major 4, then a major 5.

That will complete primary wave 3. This will then be followed by a Primary wave 4 cycle correction that probably lasts several months, and then a Primary wave 5 cycle to finish this part of the bull market from March 2009 generational lows… and all of that work is going to take time. Once that entire process from March 2009 has completed, then we should see a much deeper and uglier correction pattern, but we think that is at least 12 months or more away.

What everyone wants to know then is where are we at right now and what are some likely areas for pivot highs and lows ahead? We should complete this 3rd of a 3rd of a 3rd here shortly and have a wave 4 correction working off what will likely be almost 300 points of upside from SP 500 1343. We could see as much as 90-120 points of correction in the major index once this wave completes. Loosely we see 1528-1534 as a possible top and if not then maybe another 30 or so points above that maximum into early June. This should then trigger that 90-120 point correction, and then be followed by yet another run to highs.

We could go on but then we will lose our readers here for sure, and as it is… this is all projections and postulations, so it’s best to keep the forecast to the next many weeks or few months. Below is a chart we have put together showing the structure of Major wave 3 of Primary 3 since the 1343 lows. Once that Major wave 3 tops out (see the blue 3) then we will have Major 4, then Major 5 to complete Primary wave 3 since the 1074 SP 500 lows. Whew!

Are you ready? Gold Traders and Investors Better Get Ready To Rumble!

We have talked about how gold, silver and gold mining stocks have been flying under the media radar for over a year and that they were not catching the attention of traders, investors and the public anymore. I also said it would take some sharp price action (breakdown or rally) for it to be front and center again on TV, Radio and Newspapers.

But since gold has plummeted 17.5% dropping from $1600 down to $1320 per ounce with silver and gold stocks falling also they are now headline news once again. This move has caused some serious damage to the charts when looking at it from a technical analysis point of view. Below are some basic analysis points that show a new swing trading entry point.

The Technical Traders Chart Analysis

Broken Support – Once a support level has been broken it becomes resistance. Gold is trading under a major resistance level.

Momentum Bursts - Since the April 15th low, gold has been setting up for another short selling entry point. Remember the market tends to move in bursts of three, seven or ten days then price reverses direction or pauses. It has now been 10 days.

Moving Average Resistance – Gold has worked its way up to the 20 day moving average which can act as resistance.

Bearish Inside Bars – This type of chart pattern points to lower prices. When there is a big down day followed by 3, 7 or 10 up days inside the price action of the down bar we can typically expect another sharp drop which tests the recent lows as shown with the arrow on the chart.

GoldBear

Gold Short Selling Conclusion:

In short, gold is setting up for a low risk entry point that should allow us to profit from lower gold prices. Using an inverse ETF like DZZ or even the gold mining stock inverse ETF DUST could be played. These funds go up in value as the price of gold falls.

While I expect gold to pullback, I do not think it will make another leg lower. Instead, a test of the recent low or pierce of the low by a few bucks then reverse and start building a bullish basing pattern before going higher.

A Short Gold Position Could Pay Off With This Scenario

In this 4 minute video we explain exactly what we mean by a "short gold position." It does not mean we are bearish on gold, however the scenario we point out in this video could make money by being short gold and long another important market.

The video points out what the scenario is, and which market you should be long in, against a short gold position. This is an interesting twist and a video you shouldn't miss.

Has The Gold & Silver Play Gone To Greed?

The past few months it seems the gold and silver play has been getting a little crowed with everyone wanting to own gold. While I am a firm believer that these precious metals are a great hedge/investment long term, I can’t help but notice the price action and volume for both metals which looks to me like they are getting exhausted.

Silver – Daily Chart
The silver chart below shows an extremely high volume reversal candle in early November which typically leads to lower prices and some times a major change in the trend. That being said silver remains in an uptrend with the possibility of a bullish pennant forming. On the other hand there is a possible head and shoulders pattern forming. I will be looking for light volume sideways chop keeping a close eye for a possible neckline breakdown or a momentum thrust to the upside for a possible trade.

Gold – Daily Chart
Gold is forming a bullish and bearish pattern also giving us a mixed signal. I am currently neutral on gold and not really looking to take part until we get some type of clear price action.

US Dollar – 60 Minute Chart
The dollar has shown some strength recently. The US dollar play has been to take the short side, and a couple weeks ago we saw the dollar breakdown from yet another consolidation. It seems like everyone shorted the dollar yet again. That could have been a key pivot low for the dollar. On the weekly chart that bounce was off a major support trend line helping add some fuel to the rally I would think.

The chart below shows the recent rally and breakout to the upside. Currently the dollar is pulling back to test the breakout level (support). It will be interesting to see how this week unfolds. If the dollar bounces then we just may see metals break below their necklines to make another heavy volume drop.

Weekly Precious Metals Update:
In short, I have mixed feelings for gold and silver. Yes I think they are good long term plays, but after the run they have had it is also very possible a much deeper correction is about to take place and we may not see new highs for another year. That is a long time to have money sitting in an investment when it can be put to work in other investments. I know the herd (general public) is all head over heals in love with gold and silver which is one of the reasons why I think we are nearing a top if we didn’t already see it a couple weeks ago.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying to sell and go short metals....not yet anyways. They are both still in an up trend but some interesting things are unfolding which could cause big action in the coming weeks.

Spain is in Pain – US Dollar & Gold Are Safe Havens

It’s been an interesting week with Spain being downgraded as Europe debt crisis widens. This has investors looking at the US dollar in a new light thinking that maybe it’s not that bad of an investment after all. This sent the US Dollar higher along with the price of gold so far this week.

The past 7 days we have seen both the US Dollar and Gold rise together which is not something that happens often. With financial crisis’s popping up around the world I think the US dollar and gold will continue to strengthen (with corrections along the way). I think it will take another 12-24 months before another wave if issues arise in the financial markets and until then we just continue to focus mainly on buying the dips and corrections with the occasional short play in the larger corrections.

SP500 – Daily Chart

On April 14th we saw an extreme level of selling which sent the broad market sharply lower. This sell off was followed by value buyers pushing the prices back up to new 2010 highs.

Well this week we have seen the same extreme selling volume and the question we all want to know is will there be buyers this time around?

ETF & Futures Trading Conclusion

Gold is in a bull market but it was setup for another round of selling but this Spain issue has been a pain. If we had another downward word move on gold to the $1115 – 1120 area it would have washed out the majority of gold bulls resetting it’s self up for a big rally.

The Europe debt crisis has thrown a twist into the picture helping boost the price of gold. Gold could still head lower washing out the weak positions but the picture is fuzzy. Silver did not react much to this news as it’s not really seen as the safe haven gold or the US Dollar are.

As for stock picks and the broad market, it looks and feels like we are about to start a correction. But this week we saw fear in the market again with the VIX and selling volume surging higher to levels which have triggered temporary bottoms in the past. The problem I see here is that some key price levels have been taken out, so the odds are pointing to lower prices in the near future. But Tuesdays panic selling has pushed the market into an oversold condition so we should see a drift upwards for 1-4 days before sellers get active again as they want to sell and short the market at premium prices.

In short, precious metals are not giving any clear price action to take advantage of yet, and the SP500 looks like it’s on its last legs before heading lower for a meaningful correction which should provide a short setup and then a nice long setup once it bottoms out.

Gold closed lower on Wednesday and spiked below support marked by the 20 day moving average crossing at 1095.10. The low range close sets the stage for a steady to lower opening on Thursday.
